Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Macquarie University is the fifth and newest Faculty formed in 2014. It is also the only medical faculty in Australia to be linked to a not for profit private teaching hospital on its campus.

Beginning in 2007, Macquarie University has been developing an academic health enterprise that will constitute Australia’s first fully integrated  academic health sciences centre under a university’s leadership. With a focus on patients and an ultimate goal of improving lives, the Macquarie University Health Sciences Centre will see true convergence of the learning and research endeavours of Macquarie’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences with the clinical care provided at Macquarie University Hospital and Clinics.

The Faculty has rapidly grown to nearly 500 staff and students. The initial focus has been on developing capacity in biomedical, translational and health services research, and we have attracted more than 100 higher degree research students. Current areas of research strength include neurosciences (especially motor neuron disease, neurological rehabilitation, and the clinical neuroscience of pain), cancer medicine, and vascular science, amongst others. Our Faculty hosts the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, an internationally acclaimed powerhouse researching health systems, e-health, and patient safety. Macquarie’s combined Masters of Research/PhD program provides flexible options for students interested in post-graduate research qualifications.

In learning and teaching, the Faculty has developed a unique suite of capability-based medical educational programs aimed at post-graduation subspecialty medical education and training. We are currently in the process of developing an innovative undergraduate entry degree for students interested in studying clinical science, either as a prevocational health practice degree or as a foundation to pursue medical research.  Our Department of Health Professions offers a unique Doctor of Physiotherapy degree that is the only three-year extended masters-level, professional-entry physiotherapy program in the state. Our approach to teaching is founded on real experiences as a basis for learning, and uses educational technology to suit modern students who need to access education when and where it suits them.
