Walter Kmet,  CEO and Clinical Services

Walter has over 25 years experience in healthcare and human services in Australia, South East Asia and the United Kingdom. Walter’s experience spans a variety of organisational situations in the private, not for profit and public sectors. Walter has just commenced a new role as CEO of the Hospital and Clinical Services, after seven years as CEO of WentWest, the Western Sydney Primary Health Network.

Walter has had a strong interest in health equity, innovation, reform and quality improvement, leading integrated care and commissioning initiatives that have sought to improve outcomes for people and the community. He has led the implementation of models of integrated and team-based care, translating into the Australian context international best practice in areas such the patient centred medical home, pharmacists in general practice, and the quadruple aim. He has had a long history leading and working closely in partnership with hospitals, GP’s and service providers and consumers, incorporating patient reported measures to drive the improvement in outcome. Some of this has been reported nationally and internationally, including in the Australian Productivity Commission’s ‘Shifting the Dial’ Reports in 2017.

Walter has qualified for a Bachelor of Commerce and Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management from the University of Newcastle, a Master of Business and Technology from the University of NSW, Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor with Western Sydney University. Walter has held numerous Board and Advisory positions and is currently a Board Member of the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association and a Member of the NSW Ambulance Advisory Board.

 

Professor David Gillatt, Director of Medical Services

Professor David Gillatt gained more than 20 years’ experience in all areas of urology as a leading Prostate and Bladder Cancer Surgeon and is recognised as being one of the world’s foremost robotic surgeons. He held the positions of Director of Urology (clinical) North Bristol NHS trust and Director of Bristol Urological Institute (Research), where he led strategy and delivery of urological services and research within Bristol. Further to this, he was clinical lead for reconfiguration of Bristol Urology services, with the responsibility of reconfiguring urology in Bristol to centralise delivery of services.

David is an academic at Macquarie University, Head of Urology, and on the Executive of the Hospital and Macquarie University Clinical Associates. He is responsible for providing leadership across both the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Macquarie University Hospital in the delivery of clinical services, teaching and research, with the aim of establishing a premier urological service and medical school at Macquarie University.

Ms Deborah O’Neill, Director of Nursing

Ms Deborah O’Neill began her career in healthcare delivery in the early 1980s and has extensive clinical experience working in both public and private hospitals. Over the past 15 years Deb has moved from the clinical environment to senior management positions. Deb has a Nursing Degree, a Certificate in Paediatrics and a Master of Health Service Management. She has also completed the CEC Clinical Leadership Program, the Executive CEC Leadership Program and the NSW Health Leadership Program through HETI.

Deb has led a number of major innovations and initiatives relating to learning and development, clinical operations service provision, financial planning and management, leadership development, practice development strategies and advocacy. Deb is a strong advocate for organisational nursing quality, governance and management, with key interest areas including: quality and safety, staff professional development and education, intelligent and ethical use of infrastructure and resources and strategic planning and is committed to the provision of quality healthcare. Deb has demonstrated the ability to influence and lead change, in particular, reviewing departmental and nursing models of care, nursing workforce and skill mix, quality and safety and risk management.

DIRECTORS OF MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Professor S Bruce Dowton, Chair

Professor S Bruce Dowton has served as Vice-Chancellor and President of Macquarie University since September 2012, with overall responsibility for its academic, research, administrative, financial and development strategies. He is tasked with promoting the interests and furthering the development of the University.

Prior to his appointment Professor Dowton served as a senior medical executive having held a range of positions in universities, health care and consulting organisations in many settings around the world. He also served as a pediatrician at the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, and as Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

Professor Patrick McNeil, Director

Professor Patrick McNeil is Macquarie University’s inaugural Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Medicine and Health) where he leads MQ Health ensuring the integrated mission of academic clinical practice, education and research. The Faculty and Macquarie University Hospital together form MQ Health, Australia’s first fully integrated academic health sciences enterprise under a university’s leadership. Professor McNeil’s career has provided him with leadership roles across all three areas of academic medicine. He studied Medicine at the University of Tasmania, undertook rheumatology specialty training in Sydney, completed a PhD in immunology at UNSW, and a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School.

His research has focused on understanding the role of mast cells in arthritic and autoimmune diseases. In 2001-2005 he served as Associate Dean, Education at UNSW Medicine where he led the transformation of UNSW’s medical curriculum to a highly innovative outcomes-based program. In 2005 he took up a chair in Rheumatology at Liverpool Hospital, Sydney, and from 2012-14 joined the leadership team at Liverpool Hospital as its Executive Clinical Director. Patrick served as Chair of Arthritis Australia from 2010-2014.

Robin Payne, Director

Mr Robin Payne is Chief Financial Officer of Macquarie University and is a member of the University’s Executive Group. Mr Payne has more than 30 years’ experience in finance and commerce having received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Cambridge and qualifying as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Robin started his career with KPMG’s Audit and Advisory practice in London, before moving to Australia and working in Melbourne and Sydney. In 1994 he joined Macquarie Bank and was instrumental in establishing the bank’s operations in South East Asia.

Prior to joining Macquarie University, Mr Payne was Chief Financial Officer at NBN Co, where he was responsible for all finance-related aspects of the rollout of the Commonwealth Government’s $50 billion National Broadband Network. Mr Payne’s experience in Audit and Advisory and Investment Banking has given him a keen understanding of financial markets, governance and reporting. He thrives in developing businesses, building strong service-oriented teams that work together to achieve clear goals in challenging and rapidly changing environments.

Mr John Wigglesworth, Director

Mr John Wigglesworth is a Chartered Accountant and has been a partner at KPMG since 1997. During this career with KPMG, Mr Wigglesworth has worked with many leading Australian and international companies and specialising in external and internal audit, the design of accounting systems and controls, the application of IFRS and risk management.

Mr Wigglesworth has extensive experience working with businesses across the Asia Pacific region. He is the national leader of KPMG’s Global Japanese Practice in Australia and spent three years on secondment to KPMG Thailand in the late 1990s through the period of the Asian Financial Crisis. Mr Wigglesworth is also a member of the University’s Council.

Ms Deborah Green, AM, Director

Ms Deborah Green has had a career spanning almost 40 years in healthcare. She was National CEO and of St Vincent’s Health Australia from 2004 to 2009 with public and private hospitals and aged care across four states. Prior to this role with the Sisters of Charity, she was CEO and Board Director of South Eastern Sydney Area Health Service (SESAHS) for seven years. At that time, SESAHS was the largest health networks in Australia and included six teaching hospitals.

She entered the Senior Executive Service in 1989 taking on her first CEO role and held a variety of senior positions in the Department of Health. She served as President of the Australian Healthcare Association from 2002–2006.
Over the last several years has become a volunteer court support officer for Victims and Witnesses of Crime, served as a Director on the Migration Institute of Australia Board and the Macquarie University Hospital Board and a number of Audit and Risk committees. Her passion is to achieve excellence in clinical and corporate governance. She holds a B.Soc.Stud, an MA History and is completing a thesis in 2019.
