Patients seeing a surgeon will need a referral from their general practitioner or another specialist if they would like to claim the rebate from Medicare. Please be aware that consultations conducted in rooms are not covered by private health insurance. However, a private health insurance rebate is claimable if you are admitted to hospital for a procedure.
When you attend your appointment, please allow extra time as you may be referred for an x-ray during your consultation. This can take thirty minutes to an hour of extra time. Surgeons may also refer patients on to hand therapy for assessment and application of splints or casts, and appropriate care according to your condition. This can generally be accommodated following your hand surgery appointment, although it may be necessary to wait until the therapist is available.
Hand therapy consultations are claimable through private health insurance under either Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy, depending on who is your treating therapist. Bring in your private health fund card for immediate reimbursement using Hicaps. Splints, braces or aides are an additional cost to the consultation fee.
